The Tallest Man On Earth: Love Is All

I think that the last couple of weeks I must have been craving poetry-hued-folk-songs the same way I crave protein when I need it and the lastest by The Tallest Man On Earth (Kristain Matsson), “The Wild Hunt”, is exactly that. These songs are stories but I’m pretty certain they’re told out of order. The images are elaborate and dream-like and unmistakably emotional and his labored, crackling voice is exactly what I’d been hoping for.

“Well I walk up on the river like it’s easier than land. Evil’s in my pocket and your will is in my hand. Now throw it in the current that I stand up on so still. Love is all from what I’ve heard but my heart’s learned to kill, oh mine has learned to kill. Oh, I said I could rise from the harness of our goals. Here come the tears but like always I let them go. Now spikes keep on falling from the heavens to the floor a few chose our skin and now we don’t dream any more. We gotta house made from spider webs and the clouds are rolling in you bet this mighty river’s both my savior and my sin. Oh, I said I could rise from the harness of our goals. Here come the tears but like always I let them go. Well I walk up on the river like it’s easier then land. Evil’s in my pocket and your strength is in my hand. And I’ve thrown you in the current that I stand up on so still. Love is all from what I heard but by heart’s learned to kill, oh mine has learned to kill. Oh, I said I could rise from the harness of our goals, here come the tears but like always I let them go.”

For me, Headlights day is a very special day. I’ve written about and photographed them many times before and for me it’s always a renewing experience. They’re all such lovely people and Wildlife is a remarkable record. If you haven’t had a chance to hear it you ought to hop to it.

They’ve just begun a tour with David Bazan that covers pretty much the entire country and lasts until April 5th so get your pretty little tail out to a show.

More photos here.

Shlomit Ofir

I’m a little embarrassed it’s taken me so long to peruse the etsy shop of Shlomit Ofir since I receive dozens of compliments every time I wear the Bare Branch necklace I was given months ago by a dear friend. I particularly love the gold she uses for her simple designs. I’m so used to seeing gold all polished and sparkling (and often gaudy) but the way these necklaces are put together it’s so soft and delicate.

Highlights? In my opinion the stand outs are theĀ Bird On Branch Necklace, Matte Gold Plated Double Tree Necklace & the Long Tree Necklace.

Joanna Newsom

Joanna Newsom: Esme

While going about my days this week my heart has felt heavy. The city has felt vast and full of strangers and life seems scary. The latest by Joanna Newsom has remained fairly constant soundtrack. I’ve been going to sleep and waking up with this song in my head. It’s both a comfort and contribution to my lost feelings. This record is such a work of art and a gift. “Have One On Me” is poetry and it’s lovely to hear.

Just moments ago I found this lovely interview with her on the site for Paper Magazine. In which she explains her high school nickname, “New To the World”.

“I can feel a difference, today a difference. All of us in our tents fearing God like a mistress we lay on the rocks in the sun watching you and your women. I sat up and blinked when you appeared so pale you were nearly clear. Later I stumbled to my bed all alone in the branches I lay in the dark thinking about all of my friends and their changes. And I do not know if you know just what you have done. You were the sweetest one I have ever laid my eyes upon. It’s a beautiful town with the rain coming down, blackberry, rosemary, Jimmie Crack Corn. You’ve got the run of the place now that you’re running around and may kindness, kindness, kindness abound. In this hour of our lives out of effortless plenty. How do we know which parts of our hearts want what with such generosity. Taken so many photographs so amazed we never seen a baby so newly born and when the bulbs do flash as bright as morning a crowd keeps on gathering like an electric storm. A phantom of love moves among us as will. Each phantom limb lost has got an angel so confused like a wagging bobbed tail of a bulldog. Kindness, kindness prevails! Kindness prevails, ties and rails, ties and rails, fall into line bearing kindness. Where will you go if not here? What would you say when you write to us? And this is a world of terrible hardship everywhere and I search for words to set you at ease but here in the looking glass a kite is soaring in my waring heart and my trembling knees. Clean as the breeze, bright as a day all of the people gathered to say sweet Esme, sweet Esme. I believe love with always surround you brave as a bear with a heart rare and true but if you are scared, if you are blue, I have prepared this small song for you. Sweet Esme, sweet Esme.”

February 27th on Hawthorne

Like most Saturday mornings, today began with a declaration of my disinterest in showering leading to an inevitable decision to stay indoors all day. Eventually though, the suggestion of the Waffle Window and lack of rain forced me to do things like shower, brush my teeth, apply make-up, etc and I’m glad. It was a lively day on Hawthorne.

I managed to spy this guy:

This darling street vendor:

And this adorable “like father, like son” provoking duo:

We eventually reached our destination, the liquor store, where I realized I know nothing about liquor. While I’ve spent the last couple of years exploring wine and can fake my way through nearly any wine related conversation, I’m beginning to admit I’m allergic to the stuff but the details of imbibing liquor elude me. The mixing, the price, the unnatural colors, it might take a while to get used to. I left empty handed which I guess is alright.

Later on we watched Friday Night Lights and I may or may not have cried a little. Realizing it was only 6:30 we decided to catch a showing of Shutter Island which was not scary but kept me on my toes and I’ll admit it was sorta fun to see Michelle Williams utter some of the creepiest words imaginable.

Anyways, that’s enough from me today. So let’s just say goodnight now.
